"Heat Warning Issued for Western U.S."

drought-little.jpgThe National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an excessive-heat warning for the West:

STRONG HIGH PRESSURE AND DRY AIR WILL PRODUCE VERY HOT AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS CONDITIONS OVER THE DESERTS OF SOUTHWEST ARIZONA AND SOUTHEASTERN CALIFORNIA TODAY…WITH RECORD OR NEAR RECORD HEAT LIKELY. FORECAST HIGHS FOR TODAY INCLUDE 116 AT YUMA…118 AT BLYTHE…117 AT IMPERIAL…117 AT GILA BEND…AND 119 DEGREES AT PARKER.

Don’t worry–I’m not saying this is due to global warming (though no one can say it isn’t). I’m just saying, if we don’t take action soon, we’re all going to have to get used to these warnings.

The NWS’s basic advice is “stay indoors.” Here’s their full advice:

IT WOULD BE WISE TO COMPLETE AS MUCH OUTDOOR ACTIVITY AS POSSIBLE IN THE EARLY MORNING WHEN THE SUN AND HEAT ARE LESS INTENSE.

DURING PERIODS OF EXCESSIVE HEAT…INDIVIDUALS CAN SUFFER HEAT-RELATED ILLNESS WHEN THE BODY TEMPERATURE SYSTEM CAN NO LONGER COOL ITSELF.

IF YOU PLAN TO BE OUTSIDE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME IN THE AFTERNOON OR EARLY EVENING…STAY IN THE SHADE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE AND DRINK ABUNDANT AMOUNTS OF WATER. WEAR LIGHT-COLORED AND LOOSE-FITTING CLOTHING. IF YOU WEAR A WIDE-BRIMMED HAT…YOUR HEAD AND BODY WILL BE MUCH COOLER. STOP OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES…
DRINK LOTS OF WATER OR OTHER NON-ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES…AND IF POSSIBLE…SPEND MORE TIME IN AIR-CONDITIONED OR WELL-VENTILATED PLACES.

At the same time, flooding is expected from Oklahoma City to Dallas as thunderstorms hit already saturated land.

The combination of the two sound a lot like… hell and high water.

I couldn’t have said it better myself!

The forecast this morning in Central California was for 106˚F. Now they’re saying 112˚. There is a one day drop below triple digits projected for next Wednesday. We may have a good chance of breaking last year’s record heat wave blamed for causing over 160 deaths. Huzzah! Hope I live.
