In her big speech, Palin repeats the GOP’s big energy lie — plus three other energy lies, too

"In her big speech, Palin repeats the GOP’s big energy lie — plus three other energy lies, too"

Excerpts from Palin’s big speech are already online:

Our opponents say, again and again, that drilling will not solve all of America’s energy problems – as if we all didn’t know that already. But the fact that drilling won’t solve every problem is no excuse to do nothing at all. Starting in January, in a McCain-Palin administration, we’re going to lay more pipelines…build more nuclear plants…create jobs with clean coal…and move forward on solar, wind, geothermal, and other alternative sources. We need American energy resources, brought to you by American ingenuity, and produced by American workers.”

LIE #1 shows chutzpah, I’ll give her that much. Just two months ago, Palin said “I beg to disagree with any candidate who would say we can’t drill our way out of our problem.” Perhaps someone told the would-be energy expert that even billionaire oilman T. Boone Pickens knows her July claim was absurd (see “Pork queen Palin is an earmark expert, NOT energy expert“).

LIE #2 is that her “opponents” want to do “nothing at all.” Aside from the fact that Obama is willing to compromise on offshore drilling (see “Since offshore oil is de minimis, why shouldn’t Obama and the Dems make a deal? Part 1“), his energy plan is by far the most comprehensive one ever put forth by a candidate from a major party (see “A real energy plan for America: Efficiency now, 10% renewables by 2012, and one million plug-in hybrids by 2015“).

LIE #3 is that “a McCain-Palin administration” would “move forward on solar, wind, geothermal, and other alternative sources.” Sorry, she and McCain are soulmate Luddites. She thinks “Alternative-energy solutions are far from imminent and would require more than 10 years to develop.” McCain thinks The truly clean technologies don’t work, which is why he has consistently voted against renewables, even though, like Palin, he claims to support them (see “Why McCain hates renewables but pretends he loves them” and “Anti-wind McCain delivers climate remarks at foreign wind company“).

LIE #4 is “The Big Energy Lie,” which subsumes all the other lies in her entire remarks on energy. The Big Energy Lie is that either John McCain or the Republicans in Congress actually believe in an “all of the above” energy policy (see The Big Energy Lie). Congressional Democrats will hopefully force votes this fall that will show that claim for the disingenuous deceit it is (see Congressional Dems get smart on pushing “all of the above” energy vote).

Perhaps the only truth thing Palin said on energy that is true is “We need American energy resources, brought to you by American ingenuity, and produced by American workers.” I could not agree more. That’s what energy efficiency and wind power and solar PV and solar baseload are (see “Is 450 ppm possible? Part 5: Old coal’s out, can’t wait for new nukes, so what do we do NOW?“).

  1. Larry Coleman says:

The Palin-McCain “policy” is a nearly exact re-run of the Cheney-Bush one. The C-B plan listed everything that anyone had ever mentioned, such a complete laundry list that it was completely useless. Of course they knew that but it allowed them to say – as they have recently – that it’s not their fault if nothing has been done. No matter what the energy strategy, it’s in their plan. It is politics of the worst sort.

  2. John Hollenberg says:

Joe, excellent article. One minor typo, “Perhaps the only truth thing Palin said on energy that is true is”.

  3. Jill B says:

What’s with the photo? Is this for real?

  4. jorleh says:

This Palin seems to be some kind of energy expert with her drilling. One-night fresh scientist from Alaska, I wonder where you are going with this couple McCain an Palin.

To be sure, if the couple is going to sit in White House for eight years, it´s so long with our planet.

  5. SB says:

Notice how she also lies and pretends that she was against the Bridge to Nowhere. In reality, she supported the project, and Congress had already dumped the earmark after it became a national joke (and BEFORE she became Governor).

she has spirit…I hope she changes her mind on climate change.

  7. jb says:

Wow… so many blatant outright lies in a single speech. About herself, about Obama, about everything. Amazing.

Surely Biden will hand this candidate her head on a platter in a real debate. This is pathetic.

    Joe,

best one-liner we’ve seen down this way is:—

Palin — Republican why in from the cold.

[ need-to-know(?) is a very famous novel by Brit Len Deighton (70s/80s) titled The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. Movie also with same title)

Her energy lies were awful, yes but the more heinous lies were the ones about the Iraq invasion and our stance on terrorism. She was parroting the Bush-Cheney-right-wing-nut doctrine and had swallowed their made-for-TV speech, HOOK, LINE, AND SINKER. The only words that were hers were the hockey-mom-turned-gov crap, some of which were also lies. If elected, I have to say, our USA-USA-USA stance toward the rest of the world will so incense our enemies and allies alike that our “drill, baby, drill” energy policy (gag me), no matter how bad, will be the very least of our problems. We could easily find that the new theater for war is US soil. The mere thought of a M-P ticket has now put an item right at the top of my TO DO list: apply for citizenship in Canada. I hear it might be getting warmer up there.

  10. Cyril R. says:

In some ways, I’m glad I don’t live in the US anymore.

  11. Anne says:

    So long Anne,

Enjoy your new life in Canada.

    Write when you find work.

  12. Bob Wallace says:

“Drill, Drill, Drill” is a wake up call to let us know that we have much more to do in the way of educating the American public.

People don’t fully understand that America is not sitting on a lot of oil.

People don’t fully understand that America could reduce our oil use to a small percentage of what it is now. And that we can move away from oil with no decrease in quality of life and at the same time greatly improve our economy.

Time for concerned people to do a lot more educating.

  13. Malignedtruth says:

Does anyone think we actually can get a President who is NOT a “Beltway insider “? Power corrupts, and, “Absolute Power corrupts Absolutely”!

The next “king of the world” US President can recommend policy, but, it is the corrupt House of Representatives that proposes the budget, taxation, laws, and Judges, while the Senate ratifies.

Political Science practitioners know that the root of all the current evils are the Congress we elected, who answer to the Lobbyists. instead of the voters!

Though Democrats ‘control’ Congress, little is accomplished unless there is PORK earmarked for the home roost! Fair Tax time! http:fairtax.org will yank tax breaks out from under the feet of of the lobbyist-Congress coalition!

  14. William B. says:

I sat there appalled last night! Did she really think we would believe McCain and she would pursue all avenues of attack on the energy front? I don’t think so.
Thank heavens when Obama-Biden take over in January socialism will begin to force the correct path Americans should follow whether they understand it or not!! I can’t wait!

  15. Dano says:

Thank heavens when Obama-Biden take over in January socialism will begin to force the correct path Americans should follow whether they understand it or not!! Thank heavens when Obama-Biden take over in January socialism will begin to force the correct path Americans should follow whether they understand it or not!! I can’t wait!

I can’t wait for the only chimp screeching I hear – all sounding like ‘socialism’ – dies down.

That’s the best they can do, ululate puerile ‘socialism’ cries, as their fearless leaders have nothing to offer except the same old hate, fear and smear.

Speaking of sitting there appalled, did anyone else’s jaw drop when all the old white people chanted ‘drill, drill, drill’? Sheesh. Talk about addiction. Whether we can educate people who refuse this sort of education (it doesn’t comport with their ideology) is another matter.

    Best,

    D

  16. Jeff says:

LIE number 5: I would just like to point out, as a Canadian, that directly after stating that Americans should not rely on foreign countries for oil or energy whatsoever, Gov. Palin stated with pride how she had a pipeline built to connect Alaskan natural gas to the American people. Well, we may not be a foreign “power” but, as you might imagine due to basic geography, by far most of that pipeline is in Canada, was built by Canadians and is Canadian-owned (TransCanada pipelines).

  17. Jeff says:

PS – I’m in Canada, I’ve found work. High paying, no health benefits, but I didn’t need that anyway…

  18. fakename says:

“…his energy plan is by far the most comprehensive one ever put forth by a candidate from a major party”

You’re right, because both “major” parties aren’t any good. Look at Ralph Nader, he has a comprehensive and achievable plan but no one will listen.

  19. Andrea Jones says:

Palin is utterly boring. She repeats herself ad nauseum. The republicans run a useless platform, so in the 11th hour, they simply plagiarize the democratic platform and repeat it.

Just think, if the republicans get reelected and we get more wanton waste of huge amounts of money on ridiculous wars, these mindless crowds who are so eagerly listening to the same lies repeated constantly can feel happy and satisfied. Sure, they can’t go anywhere in their vehicles, they don’t own a home or have work. Sure, they are struggling to survive. But hey, be proud and happy because Palin dresses well and sounds confident!! Enjoy, Lou Dobbs!! Lou pretends that the democrats are no different from the republicans.

Really, republicans will get what they want and when they are miserably worse off than ever, honstly, they can be very very happy and proud because they voted for the chic woman who is a loudmouth. They voted for the team that are not afraid to openly lie and steal. And they got their war hero. Enjoy, folks. And if the U.S. is so bankrupt that it gets taken over by outside forces, well, it was an amusing experiment.

Democracy only works if the population are not brain dead.

  20. Janet Greene says:

Sarah Palin may be an expert on hunting, but I think that’s where her expertise begins and ends. The Repubs are DESPERATELY trying to bulk up her resume while at the same time trying to minimize her gaffes and “wingnut-ism” (mostly by steering clear of the press – good move). Trying to use drilling to get out of this energy mess is as crazy as if we, on the eve of the IT revolution, said “the goal is to make more typewriters!!” (I can’t take credit for this line – saw this on CNN, some pulitzer prize winner who may be truly called an expert on energy). Other countries, such as China, are pulling ahead on inventions for alternative energy, and the U.S. is lagging behind. Incredible that an uneducated woman who may be more suitable to work behind the counter at Walmart is being seriously considered as VP of this country. God help us all.
