Climate Progress is back to taking unmoderated comments — though not ones that peddle long-debunked disinformation

"Climate Progress is back to taking unmoderated comments — though not ones that peddle long-debunked disinformation"

I finally figured out why WordPress was throwing everyone’s comments into the spam folder. I have fixed that problem and the vast majority of comments will once again be posted immediately.

*Climate Progress still has its “Terms of Use,” which clearly state:

… you acknowledge and agree that we may do one or all of the following: (a) monitor the Submissions; (b) alter, edit, or remove any Submission….

I do delete comments spam that include swearing, vulgarity and gratuitous insults — this discussion is too important to be uncivil, even among those who strongly disagree.

Some people post comments and leave fake email addresses. I don’t think anonymous posters are a good idea. Such comments will ususally be deleted.

Finally, let me restate my policy on not allowing comments that simply rehash long-debunked disinformation:

Genuine debate and skepticism is great — indeed it is the basis of all science. But merely repeating long-debunked denier talking points is disinformation and propaganda. I no longer allow comments that include standard denier myths that are far outside the realm of actual observations and established climate science.

Why? If I were to allow long-debunked disinformation to be published in the comments then I would be left with a Hobson’s choice:

  1. Either I have to waste time debunking it again — and the deniers win by wasting my time or
  2. I don’t debunk it, and then people who “stumble upon” my site would be left reading undebunked disinformation.

Most of the major denier/delayer/inactivist talking points have been well-debunked many times here as well as other places like RealClimate and Skeptical Science. If you want to debate such nonsese, you can go to those websites or the myriad other blogs devoted to them.

I will, of course, take on new talking points — like the recent cooling nonsense (sometimes just to have some fun).

These policies have historically only lead to the deletion of a tiny fraction of comments posted here. The overwhelming majority of the commenters here are very thoughtful people who have helped make this blog a success.

Funny — I’m writing a novel set in an astroturf
organization. Two years ago I decided to give the deniers
the shtick of cooling, since it hadn’t been used yet.
But oh well, you can imagine more ridiculous ideas than
    these guys.

Joe Romm — Unfortunately, this has already let in two trolls. Oe is completely, offensively objectionable. The other also sometimes does multiple posts. :-(

I think it is good to see who is out there from time to time.
IT folk are working on solving this for the future.
