… and I am one of them.
Each year the AAAS Council elects members whose “efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications are scientifically or socially distinguished.” It means a lot to me to be recognized by my peers for my work, which is certainly not the traditional scientific career.
I am “being honored for distinguished service toward a sustainable energy future and for persuasive discourse on why citizens, corporations, and governments should adopt sustainable technologies.”
And what forum is better for persuasive discourse than a blog?
All new Fellows are listed in the current issue of Science (subs. req’d).

Congrats–well deserved!
Congratulations! We appreciate all of your hard work.
You are most deserving!
Kampai! Salut! Slainte! Skal! Santé! To your health!
you rock
Congrats, Joe.
Your discourse here is quite valuable, but I’ve also seen your writing quoted and referenced many times in the larger blogosphere. You do good work, and it’s having a real impact. Well done!
Awesome Joe! This honor is well earned for all the hard work you do.
Tonight I will raise an IPA to you.
joe — congrats — we need more scientists in public policy! keep up the good work.
Wonderful news – really, really great. Congratulations!
Congratulations! You’re making a difference – keep up the great work.
Maybe you’re not just preaching to the choir after all….
Congratulations!
Congratulations! — well deserved.
Well done, Joe – totally deserved. Like all of the reality-attached, I appreciate your work immensely.
Congrats, Joe!
Hail fellow well met!
This is a much-deserved honor
Wonderful news! Congratulations on the honor.
If I may: this is no Hype that we are in the cool company of the Lean, Clean, Once and Future Superblogger who relentllessly brings us the best of the best climate news come hell and high water.
Congratulations Joe, a well-deserved honor.
An honor that is well-deserved! Congratulations, Joe!
My brother Jack will save one (1) city in your honor.
[JR: Believe me, I am waiting eagerly until January. But the question on everyone's mind is -- can he save that city without torturing someone, without relying on his cell phone battery to last 24 hours with being recharged, and without being able to drive anywhere in Los Angeles (or Washington, DC) in 20 minutes?]
Kudos ! and Congrats! Now charge the barricades of ignorance!
I like that, great work, advancement of science, describes your relentless efforts to promote good science and its findings and to expose poor science and their findings.
:-)
Congratulations… always nice to be recognized for hard and good work.
What awesome news! Well done and hats off to you, Joe. Being a newbie to climate science I’ve been lurking in the shadows for a couple months now reading this blog daily and working my way through “Hell and High Water.” The straight up, no b.s. information/discussion/debate/debunking you and so many posters provide here is an invaluable service to humanity, at a time when we need real “straight talk” so desparately. Keep up the fantastic work. We’ve got your back, Joe!
It’s past due. If making a difference counts, not one in ten fellows is your equal. When I think of all the US has NOT done to mitigate climate change, I get depressed and have a drink. When I think of your work, I see cause for hope…and have a drink.
Joe: This couldn’t be more deserved and you deserve more. Your dedication to the cause has been outstanding and your journalism and fact-linking brilliant. Next news I hope to hear is a shared Pulitzer (or indeed two Pulitzers) for yourself and Gavin Schmidt at realclimate. It’s the dogged and highly-intelligent public-spiritedness you two share in the face of all obstacles that has me most impressed.
My thanks to your family as well:
Message to Joe’s family: I’m sure there are times you wish Joe could be more like a “normal” member of a family, spending more time away from climateprogress. Joe is doing a profoundly important job and I am certain there are people around the world, not just people like me in Australia, who are inspired by him. He’s a hero.

YEAH JOE!!!! Here’s to another year of your big contributions in 2009. Big year for results, and you will be central to it.
Indeed….congratulations!
I’d like to congratulate AAAS.
Many understand the importance of “Redefining Progress” in economic terms (e.g, Genuine Progress Indicator, Green GDP, Index of Sustainable Economic Welfare, etc).
Similarly, we need to redefine progress in “measuring” the advancement of science:
It means a lot that AAAS has learned to recognize significant and quality work, even when much of that work occurs outside the traditional scientific career trajectory.
(PS – Both AAAS and Wikipedia now reflect reality ;-)
