Redesign update: Main column narrowed

We have made a couple of tweaks to respond to some comments here:  “So how do you like the new redesign?

We have narrowed the main column to 600 px (20 pixels skinnier), which is I’m told what the NY Times has.  This will hopefully improve readability while giving more breathing room for the sidebar.  Also we turned off the background pattern.

    still doesn’t work in Opera

    Looks better here.

    looks better.

The sidebar needs to be a wee bit narrower too…maybe 250px max.

  4. Jim Beacon says:

Huh. Even if the NYT editorial department doesn’t know what they’re doing, apparently their layout department does because that slight narrowing of the content column really does the trick. Who’a thunk it? Buty it *is* much more readable now and the extra space between it and the right-hand column stops my eyes from tracking over there when I’m reading the content. Cool.

I’d still like to see the base font size kicked up a notch — and the elimination of the green text. All black or dark blue text all the time, please… my eyes… my eyes…

  5. GFW says:

Hmm, I liked having some sort of “texture” to the background. How about a thin grid in green over that blue – so it echos the grid in the banner, but bigger (say 4x bigger on each side)?

(Is it obvious I’m a big fan of the banner? Top notch, that is.)

  6. Cam says:

It works in Opera if one uses the ‘fit to width’ function under ‘View’.

Of course one shouldn’t have to use it.

  7. Hmpf says:

Another Opera user here who’d like to be able to see the page in her browser… (at the moment I’m switching to Firefox for reading ClimateProgress, but I have several thousand bookmarks in Opera so I would like to stay with my accustomed browser, really.)

Hi Joe, I tried to comment on your post about Warren Buffet just now, and I don’t know if you’ve even received it. I didn’t see the “awaiting moderation” message. Have you removed this as well as the ability to preview one’s comment? I wish we had that back. Hope to hear back from you.

[JR: Weird. You got into spam folder. That's hard to do! Sorry.]

  9. Dan says:

    Hi Joe,
I think a little more green in general would be better. Personally, i thought that the bold headlines of the previous site contrasted very nicely and sharply with the white background so my eyes quickly focused on the disparate headlines as the site loaded. Still having a bit of trouble finding the text sort to say with these blue headlines set against the blue background border. But that may be just me. Sorry to seem picky!

    Thanks,
    Dan

  10. Joe,

obviously you don’t have a graphics background, (and thank goodness for all the good stuff you do bring) but the NYT (assuming you mean their Green Inc blog?) is readable because there are only about 11 words across – this revamp is better than it was at 22 words per line – but it is still wider than is comfortable reading – at about 16 words across.

Your comment section has more padding so that the text is more scrunched up, and thats another way to approach it – keep the section 600 px wide but pad it more.

Most blogs I write for seem to have 500 px widths and I think that is really the comfort limit for most readers.

I notice that the comments have all gone into italics in the “Epic Battle 3″ comments thread.
