Sorry, that pun was the best I could do on short sleep.

As Kate Sheppard wrote in Mother Jones:

http://www.foxnews.com/images/260900/0_61_320_North_Ollie.jpgOliver North is using climate change denialism to fundraise for his non-profit group Freedom Alliance. In a six-page stream-of-consciousness fundraising letter, North warns of the “liberty killing ‘Cap and Trade’ boondoggle” that socialists are plotting in response to the “phony climate ‘crisis.’ ” The solution? Write him a check.

Climate change would appear to have little connection to Freedom Alliance’s stated mission, which is “to advance the American heritage of freedom by honoring and encouraging military service, defending the sovereignty of the United States and promoting a strong national defense.” And it’s not clear which roles on North’s resume””his past notoriety in the Iran-Contra scandal or his current gig as a Fox News host and commentator””best qualify him to weigh in on climate science.

Nevertheless, in his letter and a petition sent to supporters, North mashes together all manner of wacky climate change denier talking points.

UPDATE:  Below is a repost of Brad Johnson’s analysis on Think Progress, which notes that at one point, North attacks wind farms as “virtual bird eating machines”:

Oliver North's Freedom Alliance mailingLt. Col. Oliver North (Ret.) has launched a new war against the “cap and tax” plans of President Barack Obama and the “socialists in Congress.” North “” when not serving as a Fox News correspondent “” runs the Freedom Alliance, an organization supposedly dedicated to “defending the sovereignty of the United States and promoting a strong national defense.” In a mailing acquired by ThinkProgress, North pleads for “your most-special and generous donation” to fight the “‘cap and tax’ scheme and the myth of global warming.” North warns that if “Barack Obama and the socialists in Congress” establish a system to limit global warming pollution, it will be “at our nation’s peril!”

Never mind the fact that there is no proof of man-made global warming.

Never mind the fact that Europe's "Cap and Tax" policies have failed to lower greenhouse gases.

Never mind the fact that the world has actually been cooling for the last ten years.

And never mind that there is no evidence that greenhouse gases have anything to do with global warming in the first place.

No sir! None of this matters to Barack Obama and the socialists in Congress.

Because what they really want is to control your life and mine . . .

. . . and we allow them to succeed at our nation's peril!

North goes on to attack windmill farms as “virtual bird eating machines.” The attached “petition to President Barack Obama” claims that the “dirty little secret” of global warming “is that it is a scam designed at increasing the wealth of frauds like Al Gore and nations like Red China at America’s expense.”

In reality, the “scientific evidence is clear,” as the American Association for the Advancement of Science said in 2006, that “global climate change caused by human activities is occurring now, and it is a growing threat to society.” In reality, the European Trading System has worked, and Europe is on track to easily beat its 2012 Kyoto Protocol commitments. In reality, the last ten years are the hottest decade in history. In reality, as Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has said, climate legislation will allow us to “help this planet” that “is in peril, create millions of new jobs for Americans that need them, and to become energy independent to make us safer.”

But none of this matters to Ollie North and his conservative compatriots.

In the mailing, North notes that he “served in the United States Marine Corps for 22 years.” He does not, however, mention that he was convicted by a jury for illegally selling weapons to Iran during the Reagan administration.

Download the Freedom Alliance mailing and petition.

JR:  At the end of the fundraising letter, North adds this P.S. at the end:

Again, ever wonder why the liberals now always try to use the new term “catastrophic climate change” rather than “global warming.” It’s because it allows them to blame EVERY weather event (heat waves, blizzards, floods, draughts, hurricanes, etc.) on you, me, and our current use of fossil fuels. The goal? To destroy our way of life and con us into giving away billions of dollars to solve a non-crisis we have no power to prevent, even if it were real! I hope and pray that you understand – and that you will sign our PETITION TO PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA and rush it and your gift of $20, $25, $35, $50, $75, $100, or more back to me here at Freedom Alliance today.

JR:  Hmm.  I still use the term “global warming” all the time — guess I didn’t get the memo.  Ironically, many liberals are using the term “catastrophic climate change” and “global warming” less these days, but that’s another story.

Ollie wants money to enable him to communicate the real truth about climate science. Why doesn’t he just ask for a grant so he can manage a geophysical research institute?

He’s an example of how the age of movies and television elevates style and image above all. That’s how draft dodging Congressmen get away with flaunting their courage, and slimy backdoor arms dealers and PR men like North can collect money due to their jaws and haircuts.

  2. Gail says:

I like the pun! Could you fit *criminal* in there somewhere??

It’s actually kind of scary how the deniers are become increasingly loony. The more the evidence of climate disasters piles up, the wackier they have to be to maintain their ideological opposition to government intervention. I expect some serious hysteria to ensue as the truth becomes irrefutable and the fundies ready for the rapture.

  3. Robert of ACT says:

I’d say Joe & Gail have it just right! Climate Contra-ian Criminal is a Gooood label that stickkks! … Yah!

My closing thought is sad as OIL-lie enables his thoughtless followers to clammier aboard a sinking ship. Thanks to the Blind Pied Pipers [BPP] like him, many will move further to the extreme right thus enabling the tipping points to kick in. They deserve to be they be the first ones to slide off the edge into the drink! I hope they enjoy the swim! Shame on Oillie, he should know better! Ra, ra the Republican Right … and the very wrong!

  4. I ran into Mr. North at BookExpo America in New York this past May. He was congenial and was bragging how he “sold out” of his books in 5 minutes. (It’s easy to sell out at BookExpo as books are given out for free at BEA!)
Anyhoo, I gave him a copy of my children’s book, The Legend of Honey Hollow, signed to his grandchildren. My book outlines in kid-friendly terms the environmental issues that bears are facing throughout the world.
He took the book and gave me a strange look-
I have a feeling the grandkids didn’t get their gift, which is a shame. At least I tried.

  5. Jim says:

Not to rekindle an old debate, but North’s comments about “catastrophic climate change” vs. “global warming” reminded me of the infamous memo

    http://www.ewg.org/node/8684

from “Straight Talk” Frank Luntz, architect of the Contract with America, advising Republicans how to avoid losing votes over the environment. In the memo’s conclusion, Luntz wrote,

“‘Climate change’’’ is less frightening than ‘global warming.’ As one focus group participant noted, climate change ‘sounds like you’re going from Pittsburgh to Fort Lauderdale.’ While global warming has catastrophic connotations attached to it, climate change suggests a more controllable and less emotional challenge.”

Ever since I read that, I stopped using “climate change.”

  6. Aunt Sally says:

    What a goddam moron.

  7. Aunt Sally says:

Looks like he’s about as good at science as he was at illegal arms deals…

  8. Richard Pauli says:

Now we see the difference between the Court Jester and the village idiot.

  9. Alan says:

Well, we can’t say we weren’t warned. Climate scientists have been cautioning that the North could experience a major meltdown.

  10. paulm says:

    I don’t get it.

If he is really concerned about national security then Global Warming is his number one enemy.

I guess he cant blast it out the water.

  11. Stefan Min says:

The North could experience a major meltdown and release a lot of methane.

  12. pstoneki says:

I’m starting to feel that the term ‘traitor’ may be more appropriate for these deniers / hydrocarbon junkies. Time will tell.

  13. Leif says:

“North attacks wind farms as “virtual bird eating machines”:” While there is some evidence that wind farms do have a negative impact on birds, I believe that the evidence is much less than implied for a well sited wind farm. Obviously one would not want a wind farm on a “Raptor Fly Way.” On the other hand one needs to look at the impact of house cats, windows, city lighting, guy lines, etc. to get some perspective. More directly, on the North West Pacific Coast, both birds, fish, crabs and mammals, have been severely impacted by a New Jersey size “DEAD ZONE” that is attributed to weather pattern shifts caused by global warming and considered to be non reversible. This phenomena has manifested it’s self since 2002. These waters are mostly clean by the by…

  14. Gail says:

Hey, Lief, why New Jersey?? Quit picking on us, just cause we’re “cancer alley”!!

  15. Mike#22 says:

Yes, Oliver North, poverty stricken patriot. Really.

  16. Leif says:

Gail, nothing personal, just using the area as a reference at the moment, in a few years I should be able to pick a bigger state.
If it makes you feel better, ~7,400 square miles or ~ 200 miles long by 35 miles wide. Any way you want to look at it, it is a big batch of once pristine ocean to be toast.
