IPCC’s Pachauri cleared of financial wrongdoing

The embattled head of the United Nations’ scientific panel on climate change has been cleared of allegations of financial irregularity by an independently conducted review.

So the Financial Times reported Sunday in its piece, “Climate chief cleared over payments” (reg. req’d).  Here’s more:

KPMG, the professional services company, examined the personal finances of Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, after media suggested late last year that he received money for advising several private sector companies, including Toyota and Credit Suisse. The review found these were all paid to Mr Pachauri’s non-profit organisation TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute), which commissioned KPMG.

Mr Pachauri said he hoped another audit he had commissioned, to examine the practices of the IPCC and the science contained in its report, would put to rest allegations of flaws in climate science. That review will not be published until the autumn.

I somehow doubt this will get the same front-page coverage as the sensational articles attacking the IPCC head from last month (see “N.Y. Times and Elisabeth Rosenthal Face Credibility Siege over Unbalanced Climate Coverage“):

I wonder if it will get ANY coverage in the NY Times. Any bets?

  2. To predict climatic condition is one of the toughest and the most challenging job. Hope there is no more allegation of flaws in the climatic science.

[JR: Actually, predicting future climate in the case where we keep listening to the people urging us to do nothing is kind of easy. I'm afraid they're going to be an endless series of allegations since that's what the disinformers do. They allege stuff that ain't true.]

If possible, could you provide a direct link to information about the KMPG audit? Neither the KMPG nor the TERI websites seem to have any statements about the audit. All of the newspaper stories seem to originate with an exclusive interview granted to The Independent by Pachauri. It would be useful to have someone besides Pachauri himself saying that Pachauri had been cleared.

Why am I not surprised. Yet another (mendacious) myth debunked. I’m not holding my breath to see the media make this news front and centre. But maybe they will surprise us– they can’t always get it wrong can they?

  5. Ivy Bear says:

Yes they can. See today’s headline in the NY Times – weathermen with B.S. degrees don’t all agree with PhDs in climatology. Can the NY Times coverage get any worse?
