2,000 protesters march on Koch Industries DC office

Though they don’t want you to know about it, the billionaire Koch brothers are bankrolling a massive campaign to roll back progressive achievements, and today, labor, civil rights, and climate activists turned out at dozens of rallies across the country to demonstrate against the Koch’s secretive influence in American politics and to stand up for labor and civil rights.  Think Progress has the story in this repost.

In Washington, D.C. yesterday an estimated 2,000 protesters marched on Koch Industries’ Washington D.C. offices and attempted to give Charles and David Koch an invitation to come out and speak with the protesters. Not surprisingly, the building’s doors were locked and no one was allowed inside. However, a representative from the real estate company which managed the building told an handful of organizers who attempted to deliver the invitation, “I’d be here with you guys if I wasn’t working right now.” Noting that he works for the building, not Koch, he said, “I don’t want to be here.”

The events were scheduled for today because it marks the 43rd anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Memphis, TN. King traveled to Memphis to support a strike by the city’s sanitation workers, and was an ardent supporter of workers’ rights. Dr. Earl D. Trent Jr., the senior pastor at the Florida Avenue Baptist Church in Washington, told ThinkProgress that if King “were alive today, he would be right here at the forefront, no doubt.” “And that’s why we have to carry this out.”

Watch ThinkProgress’ video report:

Last Thursday, tea party activists rallied on Capitol Hill to pressure Republican lawmakers to cut government spending. Crowd estimates ranged from “dozens” to “fewer than 200,” yet the event attracted dozens of reporters and significant media interest, producing hundreds of stories in local and national press. At today’s rally, which was ten times bigger than the tea party one, ThinkProgress spotted three reporters “” none from mainstream publications.

Yeah well, when a dozen teabaggers rally it’s headline news. I’ve looked at the web sites of all the major TV news providers — CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, and NBC — as well as the Boston Globe, and this event is nowhere to be seen.

I wonder if it would be different if 2000 folks stopped by a Fox TV station for a….. well, for awhile.

The pattern of MSM publicity for Rightwing demonstrations and ignoring or downplaying resistance to the neo-feudal project is replicated, with a vengeance, in Austraya. If there is a rent-a-mob of a dozen senile delinquents rabble-roused by radio shock-jocks (every last one in the country is Rightwing, and increasingly deranged)gibbering and expectorating their venom as loudly as their emphysaemic lungs allow, their blue-rinsed heads and balding pates bouncing up and down with outraged indignation and their wrinkled and sun-damaged visages contorted into rictuses of outrage, the MSM will lead with it, multiply the numbers by ten, and declare them ‘the public’. Larger demos by young people a little concerned at the prospect of living in a dying world, are ignored, or given vastly lesser attention, while the Rightwing opinionistas, decry and slander them as ‘watermelons’,’alarmists’ and ‘panic-mongers’. For a little variety, the Greens at the last state election in NSW a fortnight ago, were smeared relentlessly by the Murdoch apparat, as ‘antisemites’, and their election posters etc were destroyed or daubed with swastikas, because a couple of them, like not a few Jews inside and outside Israel, supported the boycott Israel campaign. That particular attack has, if anything, increased since the election, with the entire Green party being slandered. The campaign to destroy any resistance within the public to the Rightist project, never ceases, it only grows ever more demented, determined and dangerous.
