Violent thunderstorms ripped through Chicagoland early this morning, with “winds up to 70 mph and more than 9,000 lightning strikes per hour.” Commonwealth Edison reported 740,000 customers lost power in the “worst storm-related outage in the company’s history,” with about 500,000 still without power. More than 200 flights were canceled at O’Hare International Airport.
