0CSSSUMP/ZOkay, maybe not a miracle, but the bar is so low for the President rhetorically now that he does deserve praise when he manages to get it right:

President Obama used some of the harshest rhetoric of his term today in denouncing the Republican jobs plan, saying the GOP’s emphasis on less regulations would harm the environment, undercut health care and fail to produce necessary jobs in the short term.

You got their plan, which is let’s have dirtier air, dirtier water, (and) less people with health insurance,” Obama said in kicking off a three-day bus tour at the airport in Asheville, N.C.

So he has the simple language and some repetition (“dirty”) here — though “less people with health insurance” doesn’t flow.  I might have said, “dirtier air, dirtier water, sicker people — and just when people need health insurance the most, the GOP wants to cut 30 million of them off.”

But let’s give him the props.  Now he just needs to repeat this a hundred times or so.

22 Responses to Messaging Miracle (VIDEO): Obama Says GOP Plan is “Dirtier Air, Dirtier Water”

  1. Dan Ives says:

So the GOP plan is dirtier air, dirtier water.

Meanwhile Obama’s plan is JUST dirty air, dirty water. (Are we really going to forgive and forget his cave on ozone and offshore drilling so quickly?)

“But let’s give him the props” – yeah, um, let’s not.

  2. Raul M. says:

Seems Canada could make a pipeline to send the natural gas from venting methane clathrates if it wanted to.
Is the change from it being a for most issue to getting the tar sands the greatest bait and switch any president ever had to face?
Maybe we are to think he could just do it all himself.
The methane is dangerous to mine but vast amounts are just going up and away.

  3. Jay A Turner says:

At least the GOP is consistent. If you want to make gobs of money by making people sick and you want small government, you have to get government out of the business of providing health care and you don’t want the EPA checking up on you.

    • EDpeak says:

They are NOT for “small” government. They just want us to believe that. They are for HUGE government: almost a TRILLION per year on militarism: pentagon, plus wars, plus military parts of Energy dept and military part of NASA, plus DIA, etc)

And of course police state and prison industrial complex including For-Profit Prisons, spend spend spend on that, and spend HUNDREDS of BILLIONS on corporate subsidies and give-aways on top..

They are not for “small” government…they are only for making the parts of government that serve the actual American public, “small” other parts they want “Big, big, big”

      • Uh, the GOP doesn’t want the government DOING all those things you mention. The GOP just wants the government to funnel the money from tax payers to giant corporations who will do all those things instead.

The GOP ideal government is a check cashing and check writing machine…nothing more. It doesn’t need to be big, it just has to get the money out of the pockets of tax payers and into the bank accounts of corporations.

  4. Jeff Huggins says:

    What??

The phrase ‘dirtier air, dirtier water’ has barely anything to do — given the way most of the public thinks of the word ‘dirty’ — with climate change.

The phrase doesn’t include the word ‘climate’, the phrase ‘climate change’, the phrase ‘global warming’, or any hint at temperature-related stuff, storms, sea-level rise, or etc. And it falls flatly victim to the misleading and confusing “clean coal” and “natural gas is clean” and so forth, and so on, messaging used by the API, the coal folks, ExxonMobil, Shell, Chevron, and blah blah blah.

So I don’t get it, Joe. The bar is so low for Obama, as you say in the post. But why is it so low? Because WE ALLOW IT to be so low. My goodness. Am I on a different planet?

To be clear, I appreciate the info in the post — but this speech on Obama’s part does not make me more comfortable with him, or relieved, or more hopeful; nor does this post give me any great confidence that we’re moving productively to actually bring about substantial change. Quite the reverse. It causes me to be concerned that we’re in the process of lowering the bar ever-more for the President — lower and lower. Will we still be applauding the President, and still voting Democrat, when the seas are that much higher, ExxonMobil still gets its way, the Keystone XL pipeline is installed and flowing, the seas are increasingly acidic, the storms stronger and less predictable, and so forth? And will our main reason for going that route (to oblivion) still be that “those other guys would be even worse”?

May I ask, has John Podesta talked recently to Hillary Clinton and/or Bill Clinton about Keystone XL, face-to-face, in-person? If so, what did he say, and what did she say? If not, why not?

Sorry for the angst and concern: I think the effort to face and address climate change — including to at least mention the words! — could and should be doing a whole lot better. Even as my concern about climate change is growing, my interest and faith in the movements, as they’re presently being led, is going south fast. I’m trying to fish around to see if anyone else agrees, and if so, what to do.

    Cheers,

I’m not praising him for climate messaging. I’m praising him for basic environmental messaging, something he is not done for 2 years. Sorry if that wasn’t clear.

I just can’t repost everything I write about Obama in every post. That’s what links are for!

  5. Jim Groom says:

I certainly hope that the President keeps the message simple. As a whole, the American people are a simple lot and need a simple message. The echo-chamber of the right has proven this fact over and over again and the opposition, including Obama, must come to grips with that fact and act accordingly.

On the contrary SPIEGEL today brought this article, about how Obama abandons his Green Agenda.

    Bitterly disappointed Obama supporters

There are no alternatives to voting for Obama. Maybe people should join the Democratic Party and help with the transition and politic agenda, from within.

    • Dan Ives says:

The last time I checked, my last ballot had more than two options for President. There certainly are alternatives to voting for either of the two major parties.

Progressives have been trying to effect change from within the Democratic Party for decades. How’s that working out for you? Perhaps its time you listened to all the Occupy protestors and realize that the Democratic Party is just as corrupt and incapable of progressive policy as the GOP.

      • prokaryotes says:

Bachmann, Perry or Cain are apparently no alternatives. Obama acknowledged climate change and talks about it.

        • Dan Ives says:

“Obama acknowledged climate change and talks about it.”

          So we should re-elect him?

Apparently talking about and acknowledging a problem is good enough for your vote. Don’t take this personally, but that’s absolutely pathetic. Obama’s rhetoric will not save the planet for our descendents. He plays lip service to the climate crisis while the world burns. He’s no friend to the climate movement, and the sooner people like yourself and Joe and many other readers of this blog wake up and realize that, the better.

          • prokaryotes says:

Yes, he is not perfect and the political climate in the US is shockingly corrupted. But i trust him, that he will act more boldly and swiftly. He is waiting for more momentum. And you need momentum in a world where literally everybody is part of the problem.

My biggest problem is that the USA as major Co2 committer has no Carbon Tax yet and no real -binding- climate targets. Is not on an emission pathway to get us off of dangerous emission scenarios. Obama needs to go more aggressively against denial, confront the opposition but again he possibly waits for more momentum. But time is running out. But not voting for him will make things worse.

He mentioned clean air, and foreign oil as problems in his last speeches, only briefly but he is aware of it. I guess he will talk again about climate change soon. He has to.

This winter will be possibly again bring record amounts of snow and ice to northern hemispheric infrastructure and will threaten supplies.

        • Bill Woods says:

“Obama … talks about [climate change].”

Refresh my memory — when was the last time he talked about it?

    • Brooks Bridges says:

“There are no alternatives to voting for Obama. ”

I reluctantly agree that’s true. So, reality says we HAVE to pressure the president we’ve got.

Bill McKibben and company have shown even a few thousand protesters are having a definite impact on the XL pipeline process.

Can you imagine the impact if the number were 100 times bigger? We must make that happen.

Any reader of CP within a 3 hour drive of DC must ask whether their current plans for Nov 6 are truly more important than joining the group circling the White House.

I’ll be there with my wife; who will join us?

    • Jeff Huggins says:

There are alternatives to the Democratic party, and if we need even better alternatives than those already existing, we may have to ultimately establish one. (Granted, it may take a few election cycles and some rocky roads.) As far as I’m concerned, if Obama approves Keystone XL, I won’t vote for him. And the more people who don’t vote for him, the more that other progressives/liberals will need to take that approach very seriously. In an important sense (if the Dems aren’t deserving our vote), the people who are willing to NOT vote for them have the most leverage, ultimately.

The philosophy of “vote for the least of two evils, even if it too won’t get us where we need to get” is probably our largest problem. Cumulatively, it has been a bigger problem — and a self-inflicted one — than the problems posed to us by the other side. Our own leaders — that is, the leaders in the party that should be paying attention to us — take us for granted and don’t get the job done specifically BECAUSE we let them get away with it, over and over and over again. We’ve practically taught them to ignore us, except when it comes to making election-time promises that aren’t kept. Forget that. No more for me. I’m “outta here” (with respect to the Obama Administration) if he approves Keystone XL. Period.

      Be Well,

      Jeff

So you think President Romney will be better for the climate then? Or how about President Cain? Does it really matter? Yes, in the abstract, you can complain about how neither party values the environment, but in reality, when you talk about “alternatives” to the Democratic party, all you really are doing is siphoning votes away from the Democrats to any of the “alternative” parties out there that have ZERO HOPE of winning elections. Our electoral system almost guarantees that there will always be 2 viable parties, no more no less. The Dixiecrats tried breaking away from the party a couple of times. Their reasoning was horrible, but regardless, all they did is hand elections to the Republicans. In addition, Ralph Nader has a share of the blame for Bush II’s first term.

Look, changing a party from the grass roots is hard. That’s why you want to throw your hands up and take the easy route by saying we need “alternatives”. Are you involved in local Democratic politics? Have you even tried to help out more progressive candidates? Have you even tried running yourself? Running away from a problem is the easiest, but least effective strategy in dealing with it. You need to exhaust all your options before you encourage people to hand the country over to teabagging idiots.

Not voting for the lesser of two evils = Voting for the greater of two evils.
