Rep. Dan Lungren (R-CA)

FOLSOM, California — As droughts continue to ravage the West, citizens are pushing back against elected leaders who refuse to acknowledge that humans contribute to climate change.

This was on full display late last week at a town hall meeting in Folsom, California. When Rep. Dan Lungren (R-CA) took questions from the audience, a woman stood up and took the congressman to task for his climate denialism. After noting that global warming has caused the “worst droughts since the depression,” the woman expressed extreme disappoint in her congressman. “I’m horrified that you would ignore scientific evidence just to appease the moneyed interests of big oil which gives generously to your campaign,” said told Lungren.

CONSTITUENT: In the last town hall in Elk Grove, you said that Republicans and Democrats differ on global warming because they have different sets of facts. You stated that you didn’t believe humans were a cause of global warming. [...] If the NOAA, the majority of scientists, and even the Koch Brothers-funded study believe that global warming is real, that seems to point that there only being one set of facts, not two, not different ones for progressives and conservatives. I’m horrified that you would ignore scientific evidence just to appease the moneyed interests of big oil which gives generously to your campaign.

Watch it:

Lungren declined to answer the woman’s question.

According to OpenSecrets, the oil and gas industry has given Lungren more than $143,000 since 2006.

Thank you for attending the Town Hall meeting and for such a well-written article. I am the constituent from the video and am pleased, especially if this helps usher Dan Lungren out of office.

There just is no room in government office for men of this ilk. We need 21st century thinking, not a member of the Flat Earth Society.

    Thanks,
    Valarie Martin

Yes, thank you Valarie. America needs persons like you at every town meeting and political event to demand accountability from our politicians.

Regarding rethuglicans, any senior citizen or woman that votes for a rethug deserves what will come to them.

    • Alteredstory says:

Thank you for calling him out, Valarie!

    • Andrew Campbell says:

      Ms. Martin,

My name is Andrew and I am a producer for The Big Picture with Thom Hartmann – an internationally broadcasted political talkshow. We are doing a story about you standing up and calling out Rep. Lungren – and were wondering if you could e-mail us a picture of yourself so we can put it on TV. If so – please send the picture to acampbell@rttvamerica.com! Thank you.

Big Oil is just Big Money, ie Big Power. If human organ trafficking was as profitable, the Burke and Hare emulating ‘entrepreneurs’ of today would be buying up politicians and the MSM would be singing their praises as ‘far-sighted’ and ‘enterprising’.

  3. Tami Kennedy says:

Would have loved to hear him spout the canned response rhetoric.

  4. Geanine Taylor says:

Kudos to Valerie! She stood up and shook her fist and had her brain attached to her head when she spoke up and said her speak. She kept her cool and didn’t go all dingy. I think that said alot about the lady! I hope she speaks up a lot more and shows up a lot at a lot more places. We need a whole lot more Waleries!

I remember working for the election of Tom Lungren about 32 years ago. I sat next to his wife on the phone banks in Long Beach. When and why did he change his goals of working for the people? I’m so disappointed that he now works for those that cause health problems for the people that believed him. He and those that have gained wealth through their friendships with unethical interests, may not suffer the health concerns, since he lives in a wealthy community that can keep those dangerous interests out. They only push for those interests to have access to our neighborhoods, usually without our knowledge or approval. Only the regular folks and their children suffer the related heath problems-but their concern is the profits of their investors-oops, political contributors.
