This test is humorous and provides a lot of great examples for talking with those who don’t believe or understanding global climate change (love the sea level rise could occur as high as I can kick example)… BUT there are no options for listening to the arguments of “denialists” and responding to them on their terms. Spouting statistics and numbers probably won’t convince anyone and according to a new study (Myers, T., Nisbet, M.C., Maibach, E.W., & Leiserowitz, A., 2012) talking about “win-win” situations or national security issue probably won’t reach the deniers either. Yet, a public health frame appears to be somewhat effective, especially when talking to conservative, white males about the public health threats to their family (Nisbet, M.C., Maibach, E. & Leiserowitz, A., 2011). Just food for thought!!

Dan Kahan has a letter published in the latest issue of Nature Climate Change:

“Seeming public apathy over climate change is often attributed to a deficit in comprehension. The public knows too little science, it is claimed, to understand the evidence or avoid being misled…. We conducted a study to test this account and found no support for it. Members of the public with the highest degrees of science literacy and technical reasoning capacity were not the most concerned about climate change. Rather, they were the ones among whom cultural polarization was greatest. This result suggests that public divisions over climate change stem not from the public’s incomprehension of science but from a distinctive conflict of interest: between the personal interest individuals have in forming beliefs in line with those held by others with whom they share close ties and the collective one they all share in making use of the best available science to promote common welfare.

Give us a jar of Holy Water, some garlic and enough silver bullets, and it would be a doddle.

  3. Mark E says:

Since denialists’ only audience is the general public, and their only goal is get that audience to tune out, I make no effort to fight off denialists unless there is a third person listening (who becomes my true target audience). Otherwise, all arguing with committed denialists is wasted energy.

    • Wise. They truly are a waste of time, and most, or at least many are hostile. Denialism is an emotional position, and provoking denialists can lead to outbursts and worse. Pick your fights.

They are the intellectual equivalent of bricks, and I cannot waste time on inanimate objects.

This Quiz was a uniquely enjoyable post for Climate Progress. Let’s see more like these!
