Polar bears can’t catch a break anywhere, least of all Fox News.

On Fox and Friends this morning, Fox Legal Analyst Peter Johnson Jr. was asked about last week’s ruling by the D.C. Circuit to uphold the decision to protect polar bears as a “threatened” species. He made the case that environmentalists use polar bears as a fundraising tool, and that the threat to polar bears may be imaginary:

JOHNSON: It really depends upon whether you believe the global warming is real, whether polar bears are actually threatened or not. This has become a big fundraising tool and it’s become a problem, too, for oil interests throughout the world because they have to act in a way that is very expensive in terms of making modifications.… So is global warming real or not real? I’ve heard a lot of people say it’s not really real.

Watch it:

Global warming is undoubtedly real. In fact, the real climate debate has shifted to how much climate scientists have actually underestimated global warming impacts.

With regard to polar bears, the court said that the Fish and Wildlife Service listed the polar bear correctly as “threatened”:

“The Listing Rule rests on a three-part thesis: the polar bear is dependent upon sea ice for its survival; sea ice is declining; and climatic changes have and will continue to dramatically reduce the extent and quality of Arctic sea ice to a degree sufficiently grave to jeopardize polar bear populations…. No part of this thesis is disputed and we find that FWS’s conclusion – that the polar bear is threatened within the meaning of the ESA – is reasonable and adequately supported by the record.” [Page 14]

It went on to say that 13 out of 14 peer reviewers found the rule generally “represented a thorough, clear, and balanced review of the best scientific information available from both published and unpublished sources of the current status of polar bears.”

Polar bears depend on sea ice for feeding. Arctic sea ice volume has collapsed. The question on threats to polar bears is not over whether general population estimates are stable. (Where there is sufficient data, many more subpopulations are decreasing than are increasing.) If Fox and Friends wants to get to the root of the issue, they should host a discussion about whether polar bears should be classified as “threatened” or “endangered.”

Polar bear ranges will only get more crowded by other animals. Under an incorrect-yet-ironic headline (“Study: Global Warming Helps Polar Bears,”) Fox News reported in January that many mammal species will expand their ranges northward as the Arctic warms. As the sea ice melts, the polar bears will surely welcome their new grizzly bear overlords from the south.

  1. “So is global warming real or not real? I’ve heard a lot of people say it’s not really real.”

And here we have the root cause of the imbecile irrationality still plaguing climate change deniers. I’ve heard a lot of people say that pigs can fly too. It doesn’t mean I believe them.

How about this? Why don’t we take this pundit’s house and transport it to the thickest remaining sea ice. Then, we could conduct live interviews. When his house falls through the melting ice (1-5 years), then he can report his direct experiences with human caused global warming.

    • Mulga Mumblebrain says:

When you see this level of malignant idiocy and willful ignorance, up there on the box, in the MSM (where it dominates the ‘conversation’)it is akin, in my opinion, to hearing some German functionary, in the 1940s, saying, ‘Some people say locking up Jews, Roma, homosexuals, Slavs and all those other untermenschen and getting rid of them, isn’t so bad, after all. They also think that invading Poland wasn’t too naughty, either’. Only, of course, this time the numbers of victims will be one or two orders of magnitude greater.

    • global warming is real. global warming is cause by us because of how we are putting chemicals in the air from the gas to burning coal.

    • Alex says:

Wasn’t “some people say” one of the Faux News favorites? I guess he fits right in. Doesn’t have to trouble with citing anyone with a shred of credibility on climate.

  2. Jackie says:

Fox Fake news is about as dumb as their host as we witnessed. It was sad hear but true as Fox Fake news host couldn’t answer math questions their children had submitted. When you hired uneducated/unqualified people the viewers that watch learn how to be dumb too. Polar Bears will die off because of Global Warming and you don’t have to be really smart to know that.

    • Mulga Mumblebrain says:

‘Dumbing-down’ is deliberate policy. In politics, the MSM and business, intellectual mediocrity is required, I suppose so that the Bosses don’t get embarrassed by their underlings, and to reassure the serfs that their ignorance is OK. No-one is hated hereabouts more than a ‘smart-arse’- ie anyone who uses their brain for any activity beyond opening a tinny of beer, or turning on the television.

      • Mike Roddy says:

        As George Carlin once said,

“The people in charge want us to be just smart enough to operate the machines and do the paperwork, but not smart enough to think. Critical thinking- they don’t want that, it’s not in their interest”.

        • Mulga Mumblebrain says:

The active, quite frenzied, attacks on public education and teachers, throughout the Anglosphere, is living proof of that tendency on the Right.

  3. Chris says:

I can’t tell the difference between the SNL version and the actual version.

  4. Robert A. Cuthbertson, M.D. says:

Is there some way we can prevent these ignorant fools from breathing air we need???

  5. A. Garcia says:

“So is FOX NEWS real or not real? I’ve heard a lot of people say it’s not really real.”

  6. Paul Klinkman says:

A few polar bears will survive in zoos because they’re big and iconic. Also, they adapt to human garbage dumps well.

It’s the other ten million or so species that will quickly become extinct forever because nobody froze their eggs in liquid nitrogen. However, I’ve heard of a charity that freezes heirloom breeds of cattle, so it’s not like the idea is too outlandish.

    • Sasparilla says:

Your right on target Paul. The Polar Bears in Zoos will become stranded relics in time – besides the fact we’re not getting the north to refreeze any time soon, their mothers teach them all their hunting skills and that knowledge will no longer be around if (many generations from now) we get the pole to freeze again (let alone any of their prey).

The scale of planet wide ecosystem destruction we’re unleashing is almost beyond comprehension…the arctic is but the first.

  7. Joseph DiMicco says:

Intentional ignorance. The reason that the populations have been relatively stable has to do with restrictions on hunting. This would have led to much larger populations today IF THEIR HABITAT WERE NOT BEING DEGRADED BY THE CLIMATIC CHANGE. The projections for the future are, in my assessment, likely to be accurate. But, in the end, people will believe what they WANT to believe. *sigh* So Long, polar bears…

    • Jesse Dorsett says:

Unfortunately, people will believe the biggest and loudest lies they hear. The bigger the lie, the easier it is to believe. Also, people don’t like to be inconvenienced, so just cater to that need for complacancy. Our current media system, the most advanced, perfected propoganda machine ever developed, will continue to influence public opinion and shape the attitudes of the masses with direct lies and subterfuge: and that is what the people will believe.

      • Merrelyn Emery says:

You can fool some of the people some of the time but…they have functioning perceptual systems and are also highly sensitive to the views of the majority. Which is one reason why the people making their views known is extremely important, ME

  8. Mulga Mumblebrain says:

What do you expect? As my father was prone to intone, as yet another Rightwing jabberwocky spewed forth similar gibberish (he was spared Fox News)-’Just look at the head on it’. ‘I’ve heard a lot of people say..’ just indicates the circles he moves in, circles which are circling the bowl, prior to a bracing spin around the S-bend. These are the creatures who are destroying humanity. That’s a thought that ought to exercise our consciences. We are still letting them get away with it.

    • Sasparilla says:

Yes, well put Mulga. I regret that these folks in charge of this will be in the ground before they can be called to account for the damage they will directly cause human civilization later.

  9. VALERIE MARTIN @WILLDYE4U says:

Valerie Martin @WILLDYE4U Yea, ‘cuz like hannity says…”we’re robbing from our kids and grandkids!!” (re: the deficit)
NEVERMIND the fact that we are poisoning the water, polluting the air, contaminating the soil….ALL the things a human being needs to survive!!
ALL the money in the WORLD will be worthless…
It will just decompose like EVERYTHING else on the planet.
    (O! except all the plastic!)

    • catman306 says:

Some micro organisms that can obtain energy from plastic will evolve and plastic, too, will decompose.

    • Mike Roddy says:

Notice that MSM will not allow their reporters to mention a Fox boycott. They share many of the same advertisers. This kind of conflict is just a charade, while the big boys keep looting the earth in the background.

      • Lore says:

Right on Mike;… It’s pretty hard to sell cars while truthfully reporting the fake oil boom, or that “You’re in Good Hands” with your insurance company when warning that storm waves will continue to push through the first story windows of your house.

      • Mulga Mumblebrain says:

They are all in it together. Murdoch is a God to the parasite caste.

  11. Pickwick says:

“I’ve heard a lot of people say it’s not really real.”

You need to stop listening to all those voices in your head!

    • Lore says:

First, you have to take a step back and consider who the lot of people are that’s being mentioned.

Please, no real names given out of embarrassment.

  12. langostino says:

Fox “News” legal analyst, pontificating about science. Yeah, he is credible.

  13. Marie says:

Could he have been any more clear? His priorities any more exposed?
He will trash the environment, the wildlife, and care nothing about the domino effect of pollution, because he won’t see the oil companies (or other corporations) have to spend a dollar to make modifications.

Ice and sea level watchers may have to include Canadian glaciers retreat in their calculations.

  15. Matt says:

Last I checked, Fox and co. were insisting we had to kowtow to the *claimed* wishes of some people’s IMAGINARY FRIENDS in regards to contraception coverage in health insurance – so WTF does Mr. Johnson’s belief-or-otherwise in climate change have to do with ANYTHING?

  16. Tom King says:

Listen for the “WOOOSH” sound effect at 1:33.
It occurs just when he is hitting the high point of his propaganda message. This is some form of subliminal mind control.

  17. Brianna Amore says:

Shorter Fox: “Our corporate masters (Kochs) have decreed that any mention of climate change must be spoken with derision, misrepresentation, and outright lies”

The Idiocracy has truly taken over.

  18. sandyh says:

Perhaps if someone dressed up like Jesus rode a polar bear at the Creationism Museum (like they have Adam and Eve riding a dinosaur) the Religious Right would tell Big Oil and Faux News to go soak their heads in the melting ice?

  19. Schmed says:

When our country & planet finishes its long, slow, agonizing death can we all agree that Fox News should get a big part of the blame for it? They have been brainwashing so many gullible citizens over the last 20 years to the point where a big portion of our population are purposely ignoring all of the things that are killing us off – weapons, climate change, pollution, food safety, just to name a few. At the same time they bad mouth the things that could help us recover – scientific research, government oversight, investing tax dollars in the proper programs, etc. For this type of behavior, they should be viewed as anti-American, anti-Earth & should be shut down.

  20. Vincenyt says:

We should set Mr. Johnson adrift on an ice floe somewhere in the arctic and leave him to the polar bears. What a dick !

  21. Yep, Hybrid Polar/Grizzly bears is really going to be a comforting factor thanks to man made climate change. Not.

  22. Jon says:

Most polar bear communities are already declining. Melting ice is the greatest threat to their future. http://clmtr.lt/cb/pQR0SL

  23. Jason Miller says:

“Global warming is undoubtedly real. In fact, the real climate debate has shifted to how much climate scientists have actually underestimated global warming impacts.” – Exactly. Giving a national stage to idiocy like this is only encouraging misinformation. Fox News should be charged with crimes against humanity. Also: Most polar bear communities are already declining. Melting ice is the greatest threat to their future. http://clmtr.lt/cb/pQR0tz

  24. diamondmask says:

To be sure, the stupidity is astounding, but the actual root cause is greed. If it costs corporations money, they will drown before they understand just how reckless they are being.

    • Mulga Mumblebrain says:

Greed is actually, I believe, a symptom of a deeper malaise, one which I would call ‘spiritual death’. For some reason, certain individuals are incapable of spiritual and moral understanding. They lack empathy and compassion, and are tightly bundled up in their own existence, their own psychologies. They are little ‘island universes’ totally disconnected from the rest of reality on the spiritual plane. The cause of this spiritual death, may be genetic, and we must think of it as a moral still-birth, or social, in that certain traits are passed on by the family, or the community of other dead souls, in certain elite institutions (like the Public Schools of England, notorious for their dehumanising regimes). In any case the dead souls, who we know as ‘the Right’, have taken over the world and created an all-encompassing operating system, known as ‘capitalism’, to entrench the ethos of dehumanisation in all human institutions, and are, naturally, as they have no real attachment to life in its variety and persistence, destroying everything that they can reach, and we are all just ‘collateral damage’.

  25. Erica Terence says:

Most polar bear communities are already declining. Melting ice is the greatest threat to their future. There is nothing more heartbreaking than watching your home melt away around you. http://clmtr.lt/cb/pQR0Ta

  27. Caryn Bosson says:

If you’ve seen the excellent documentary Chasing Ice (http://www.chasingice.com/,you've witnessed polar ice sheets melting before our eyes. This is polar bear habitat. Where are they going to live if the ice is gone?
