    Next week I will be talking about climate change in my general biology class. Short videos like this may make an impression on students. My other favorites are methane gas being lit from a hole in arctic pond ice and a map showing Illinois and Michigan moving to the planting zone of northern Alabama by mid century. Saying that the average temperature on earth will increase by X degrees does not mean much to college students or average citizens.

    Great vid. However, the sea ice melting will not convince many to take global warming serious.

    Direct impacts like Sandy I am convinced are the only thinks at the moment that do. May be a combination of these events with strong leadership could motivate others who are not directly affected… who knows.

  4. When the ice cap goes, the jet stream will go nuts. Its circulation is a dynamic function of the temperature gradient between the pole and the lower latitudes. As that gradient literally degrades, the jet stream is becoming more erratic and prone to large, southward excursions. That’s why Sandy took an abrupt left at New Jersey–it was kicked there by a deep meander of the jet stream.

    Another deep meander was why the east was particularly cold this spring.

    When the summer Arctic inverts from heat reflector to heat collector, the jet stream’s circulation will be profoundly disrupted. Its hub will be in a different phase state–water rather than ice. It seems reasonable to assume that the jet stream will be fundamentally perturbed. That is very likely to affect seasonal rainfall and by extension agriculture.
