$385 Billion In Federal Taxes Go Unpaid | According to new numbers from the Internal Revenue Service, “close to 15% of federal taxes — or $385 billion — went unpaid in 2006,” the latest year for which the IRS has full data. Eighty-four percent of the shortfall — known as the “tax gap” — is due to underreporting of income.
