70,000 People To Unexpectedly Lose Unemployment Benefits Next Month

According to the National Employment Law Project, 70,000 unemployed Americans will unexpectedly lose their unemployment insurance benefits next month, “bringing the number of people cut off prematurely this year to close to half a million.” These cuts are occurring thanks to Congress, which decided that a state’s access to federal funds for extended unemployment benefits disappears if its unemployment rate stops increasing. At the moment, more than five million Americans have been out of work for six months or more.
