"Paul Ryan Blasts Rubio For Opposing Budget Agreement: ‘Read The Deal And Get Back To Me’"
House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) is blasting conservatives for opposing the $85-billion budget deal he reached with Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), including Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), a potential 2016 presidential candidate. Minutes after Ryan and Murray released their proposal on Tuesday, Rubio issued a press release claiming that the agreement would make it “harder for more Americans to achieve the American Dream.”
During an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe Thursday morning, Ryan urged Rubio to “read the deal and get back to me.” “People are going to do what they need to do,” he said, “in the minority you don’t have the burden of governing, of getting things done.” Watch it:
The agreement, which the House is scheduled to consider on Thursday, partially repeals the next round of automatic budget cuts for fiscal years 2014 and 2015, providing $63 billion in relief from sequestration split evenly between defense and non-defense programs.
“I thought it was a little strange because the press releases came flying out against the agreement before Patty and I reached an agreement,” Ryan said, referring to the slew of conservative groups — like Heritage Action and Club for Growth — who immediately condemned the measure. “I would prefer that people would actually read what we’re doing and see the details before forming conclusions.”
Ryan’s comments come just one day after House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) lashed out at conservative groups for whipping against the measure. “They’re using our members and they’re using the American people for their own goals,” Boehner said during a press conference. “This is ridiculous. If you’re for more deficit reduction, you’re for this agreement.”
Conservatives oppose the measure for spending above the budget caps imposed by sequestration, while leading Democrats have criticized it over the exclusion of federal unemployment benefits.
