After initially making only a tepid statement disagreeing with Missouri Republican Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin’s highly offensive comments Sunday that female victims of “legitimate rape” rarely become pregnant, the Romney-Ryan campaign finally denounced Akin’s comments Monday. “Congressman’s Akin comments on rape are insulting, inexcusable, and, frankly, wrong,” Romney told the National Review Online, adding “Like millions of other Americans, we found them to be offensive.”
Romney campaign senior adviser and Virginia state legislator Barbara Comstock, in an MSNBC interview Monday, refused to call on Akin to apologize. She also failed to acknowledge that Ryan has previously opposed the rape exception.
