NC Gov. Bev Perdue Vetoes Offshore Drilling, Embraces Offshore Wind

Gov. Bev Perdue (D-NC) took a big step toward creating jobs and reducing her state’s dependence on foreign oil, signing an executive order to create the “Offshore Wind Economic Development Task Force.” The order was issued in conjunction with her veto of Senate Bill 709, which would have pushed the development of offshore oil and gas, as well as onshore gas “fracking.” Perdue was clear in her justification for the decisions, stating unequivocally that she is “completely committed to North Carolina’s energy policy of developing jobs that foster America’s energy independence.” Studies have found offshore wind projects in North Carolina could produce up to 20,000 manufacturing jobs in a region that desperately needs them. — Kiley Kroh
