The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new once-a-day pill that combines four medications in one to treat adults with HIV. But the price manufacturer Gilead Sciences plans to charge for the drug is too high –around $28,500 per year — according Michael Weinstein, president of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. “That’s shockingly irresponsible,” he told the New York Times. “It’s just unsustainable at these levels.” A Gilead spokeswoman said the company would provide discounts to state AIDS Drug Assistance programs, and it gave rights to some Indian companies to make generic versions of the drug to sell in poor countries.
