The Wall Street Journal reports that, in the wake of ever-improving pharmaceutical innovation, more HIV-positive patients are receiving kidney, liver, and even heart transplants. According to the Journal, transplant procedures for Americans with HIV have tripled since 2005. Although there has never been a formal ban on these procedures for HIV-positive patients, hospitals have been reluctant to perform them out of fear of low life expectancy. But aided by huge strides in HIV treatments and medical innovation over the last two decades — including the recent FDA approval of a once-a-day HIV treatment pill — post-diagnosis life expectancy for Americans suffering from the virus has increased by more than 10 years.
