Rick Perry Still Supports The DREAM Act: To Punish Kids For Parents’ Actions ‘Is Not What America Has Always Been About’

Ten years ago, Gov. Rick Perry (R) made Texas the first state to sign a “DREAM Act” measure into law. Known as the Texas Dream Act, the law provides that all students, regardless of immigration status, may qualify for in-state tuition at Texas colleges or universities. Though criticized by conservatives and Tea Party members, Perry stood by the law yesterday in his first New Hampshire interview yesterday: “To punish these young Texans for their parents’ actions is not what America has always been about.” In 2001, Perry’s message was similar to President Obama’s in 2008. Stating that “we don’t care where you come from,” Perry declared, “The message is simple: educacion es el futuro, y si se puede.”
