Last week, Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) appointed Judge Hassan A. El-Amin, who became the first Muslim appointed to the Maryland state judiciary when he was appointed as a district judge in 2000, to a Maryland Circuit Court. Judge El-Amin’s new assignment includes the most serious criminal cases and major civil cases — as a district judge, El-Amin dealt primarily with misdemeanors and small claims.
