- Maine’s right-wing Gov. Paul LePage opposes any attempt to fix the state’s public financing law now that the Supreme Court invalidated a very similar law in Arizona. Since LePage took over as Maine’s governor, the state government has been much more interested in preventing people from voting than in passing laws to reduce corporate influence in politics.
- The Ninth Circuit held that, while an alleged incident where police tazed a domestic violence victim after her daughter called 9-1-1 violated the Constitution, the police were nonetheless immune to a federal lawsuit.
- A Pennsylvania judge accused of forcing a defendant to call himself a “scumbag” was removed from the bench.
- A New Jersey judge held that Gov. Chris Christie’s new law restricting public employee benefits cannot constitutionally be applied to judges.
- So-called “personhood” advocates, who are pushing state laws that could render many forms of birth control illegal, bring their crusade against reproductive rights to Nevada.
