- A Virginia appeals court overturned the conviction of a man who spent the last 29 years on death row.
- Meanwhile, the ultra-conservative United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit upheld a Georgia law that makes it very difficult for mentally retarded inmates to prove that they suffer from this mental deficiency and therefore cannot constitutionally be executed. The opinion was written by Judge Frank Hull, the right-wing judge that recently voted to strike down part of the Affordable Care Act.
- Train enthusiasts who were arrested for photographing subway trains sued the NYPD, noting that there is no law forbiding such photography.
- A Virginia state delegate predicts that the state legislature will soon consider a bill mandating that college campuses permit concealed firearms on campus.
- A fedeal appeals court held that grizzly bears still belong on the list of species labeled “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act.
