Arkansas’s Attorney General Dustin McDaniel rejected a proposal by anti-abortion activists to put a “personhood” amendment on the state’s ballot. McDaniel said the measure is misleading and a direct violation of the Supreme Court’s ruling upholding women’s constitutional right to an abortion. He called the measure’s name, “The Paramount Right to Life,” “a clear-cut example of the partisan coloring we have uniformly condemned in our decisions.” He also notes that the ballot title does not inform voters that it would prohibit the use of public funds for abortion except when the mother’s life is in danger, and would authorize the legislature to prohibit abortion to the extent it can under current law. Personhood Arkansas has vowed to press on regardless of his ruling.
