Deportation Delayed For Undocumented Student After Washington Post Article

Earlier this week, the Washington Post highlighted the story of 18-year-old Heydi Mejia, an undocumented student in Virginia who came to the U.S. at age 4 and was scheduled to be deported this month days after her high school graduation. But after the article, officials granted Mejia, who came to the U.S. with her mother when she was 4, a one-year reprieve from deportation. The Obama administration had said that DREAM Act students, like Mejia, would not be targeted for deportation, but other undocumented immigrants also have had to fight against deportation. If the Obama administration has a policy to halt deportation in low-priority cases, like students, then it should not take a newspaper article or a large rally to help these immigrants.
