The Supreme Court stayed the execution of John Balentine, a Texas inmate scheduled to be killed last night. The Court’s brief order gives the Court additional time to consider whether they want to hear his claim that he received ineffective assistance of counsel when his defense attorney failed to discover evidence of his abusive childhood that could have convinced a jury to sentence him to life in prison. If the justices ultimately decide not to hear the case, the stay will be lifted.
