Former Texas Solicitor General and current Senate nominee Ted Cruz (R) told Politico Thursday that campaign finance limits should be eliminated entirely so donors can give as much as they like directly to candidates. Cruz said “I believe in free speech. If it were up to me, I would eliminate all the limits and require immediate disclosure.” This is not a unique view in his party: Mitt Romney has proposed the same concept and this week the Republican National Committee adopted a platform asserting a First Amendment right to devoting “one’s resources to whatever cause or candidate one supports.”
