- Three members of Congress wrote Attorney General Eric Holder seeking a federal investigation into two voter registration companies hired by the Republican Party that spawned allegations of criminal activity.
- The Supreme Court appears poised to hold that police cannot detain someone who is not at home while they are searching the person’s house.
- A 2010 Supreme Court decision said immigrants whose lawyers failed to advise them that a guilty plea would lead to deportation are entitled to withdraw the plea. The justices considered yesterday whether this rule also applies to immigrants convicted well before the decision was handed down.
- A federal court struck down a city ordinance requiring sex offenders to display a sign reading “No candy or treats at this residence” on Halloween.
- And, finally, Glamour magazine names Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg a woman of the year 2012.
