"Multiple Gunmen Open Fire During New Orleans’ Mother’s Day Parade, At Least 12 Injured"
Police in New Orleans confirmed that at least 12 people — including a 10 year old girl — were shot by as many as three gunmen on Sunday afternoon during a parade to celebrate Mothers’ Day.
Though none of the victims appeared to suffer life-threatening injuries, police spokesman Ronald Serpas said that three or four victims were admitted to local hospitals for surgery. Authorities say that three possible suspects were seen running from the scene. One of them was identified as a male between the ages of 18 and 22.
A reporter for the Times-Picayune was participating in the parade, and reported hearing six or seven gunshots. According to police, at least two different types of guns were likely used by the shooters.
Sunday’s attack is just the latest in a series of mass shootings that have plagued the country in the last several years. Just today, four mothers who lost their children during the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School last December published a somber reminder to all Americans of the dangers that guns pose to young children.
The Associated Press is reporting that the number of victims has risen to 17. So far, no fatalities have been reported.
