Americans Own Almost Half The Privately Owned Guns On The Planet

The number of guns held by Americans has swelled to an estimated 300 million in the past two decades, meaning that Americans account for nearly half of the privately owned firearms in the world. According to a new essay published by Brookings Institution, even the conservative estimate puts the number of guns at 270 million or 88 guns for every 100 Americans. Although the data is from 2007, gun sales have only risen as the National Rifle Association and gun manufacturers have capitalized on public fear over multiple school shootings.
