Death Row Inmate John Errol Ferguson

In a brief order Monday afternoon, the Supreme Court announced it would not intervene in Florida’s plan to execute mentally ill inmate John Errol Ferguson at 6pm the same day. The order does not explain the Court’s rationale, providing simply that “[t]he application for stay of execution of sentence of death presented to Justice Thomas and by him referred to the Court is denied.”

Ferguson is a paranoid schizophrenic who believes that he is the “Prince of God” and that his execution is preparing him for “ascension.” His attorneys hoped to prevent his execution by pointing to Supreme Court precedents forbidding a person who is incapable of “comprehending the meaning and purpose of the punishment to which he has been sentenced” from being put to death.
