Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) asked fellow Democrat and San Diego Mayor Bob Filner to step down from his post in a letter this morning. Filner has faced accusations of sexual misconduct over the last month from now 11 women who claim he made inappropriate sexual comments and advances and forcibly kissed and groped them.
Filner’s alleged behavior and his reactions to the accusations have sparked outrage. In July, Filner asked taxpayers to pay for the legal bills resulting from his sexual harassment lawsuits because he lacked sexual harassment training. But the latest revelation about Filner’s behavior seems to be what specifically has compelled Senator Boxer to urge Filner to step down: Filner allegedly targeted military sexual assault victims because they were especially vulnerable.
In the letter, Senator Boxer tells Filner, “The latest revelations regarding your behavior toward women recovering from sexual assault – women who desperately need our help – have shaken me to my core…Bob, you have already hurt so many people. To avoid hurting your victims and the people of San Diego more than you already have, you should step down immediately.”
With a month having passed since the first accusations, Filner has refused to step down from his position as mayor but has taken temporary leave to undergo an intensive therapy program.
