On Thursday, the University of Michigan condemned a fraternity party as “offensive” and “unhealthy” for encouraging racism and sexism. The planned November 7 party invited, “bad bitches, white girls, basketball players, thugs and gangsters,” for “Hood Ratchet Thursday.”

MLive reports that the invitation, which has been taken down, featured a black man with a wad of cash saying “we goin back to da hood again!!” and “hood IDs will be checked.” Prompted by the university, the fraternity formally apologized “for the harm that this has caused to members of our campus community,” the fraternity president’s e-mail said. “I would like to apologize to all of the members of our student body, including those of all ethnicities, and to all women, for our extraordinary lack of consideration, and lapse in judgment.”

Greek life at colleges across the U.S. is a common promoter of rape culture and white privilege, with antics like asking “who would you rape,” advice on “luring your rapebait,” and showing up in blackface.

Here is the response from the fraternity member responsible for creating the Facebook event. In it, student Allen Wu apologizes “for any negative emotions that you and any other offended members of the community may have felt,” and blames hip-hop and the media that “glorify sexist and superficial themes.”
