During President Obama’s State of the Union address in which he vowed to take action on — among other things — the pervasiveness of gun violence, there was yet another shooting on a school campus.

Police were called to the campus of Tennessee State University shortly after 9:00pm, where an unidentified individual was found having been shot in the leg. The university has not yet released any information on either the suspect or the victim.

Witnesses spoke with a local news channel and said that two people got into an argument which quickly escalated, and one man opened fire, police have confirmed.

This is at least the ninth school shooting so far this year. Prior to this week, the country had been averaging one school shooting every other school day. As of Tuesday night, that rate is now even higher.

President Obama has already used the power of his office to begin efforts to curb gun violence, but many of the reforms that gun reform advocates are demanding require congressional action.

It was during last year’s State of the Union address, coming weeks after the tragedy at Sandy Hook elementary school, in which he made a direct appeal to lawmakers to take up many common-sense gun reforms, including universal background checks and limiting the kinds of ammunition available for public consumption. Despite overwhelming support by the public, Congress has largely failed to move at all to address the problem.

Gun violence prevention took a back seat to other important issues this year, but Obama again beseeched lawmakers to take action, and promised to act alone if necessary.

“I intend to keep trying, with or without Congress, to help stop more tragedies from visiting innocent Americans in our movie theaters, shopping malls, or schools like Sandy Hook,” he said on Tuesday night.
