Box Turtle Bulletin’s Timothy Kincaid offers this helpful map of where LGBT equality stands in the states following New York’s historic passage of marriage equality. Currently, “about 41.8% of all US residents live in a state in which some measure of recognition is given to same sex-couples” and “another 7.3% of the population lives in one of the dozens of cities which offer some form of recognition and protection for same-sex couples”:

The breakdown:
– 6 STATES, 11.5% OF POPULATION HAVE MARRIAGE: Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, District of Columbia, New York (Green)
– 5 STATES, 8.2% OF POPULATION HAVE CIVIL UNIONS: New Jersey, Illinois, Hawaii, Delaware, Rhode Island (Blue)
– 4 STATES, 16.3% OF POPULATION HAVE DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIPS: California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada (Red)
– 4 STATES, 5.8% OF POPULATION HAVE LIMITED RECOGNITION: Colorado, Wisconsin, Maine, Maryland (Yellow)
