"Bachmann, Santorum Distanced Themselves From ‘Gay Is A Public Health Risk’ Vow Before Endorsing It"

Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum may have been the first presidential contenders to sign on to The FAMiLY Leader’s extremist pledge calling for a ban on pornography, arguing that homosexuality is a choice, and implying that black people had stronger families during slavery, but they weren’t always so eager to align themselves with the conservative organization. In fact, during separate appearances before the Leader’s presidential forum, neither Bachmann nor Santorum endorsed the group’s view that homosexuality was a public health risk akin to second hand smoking. Bachmann was left speechless when pressed on the allegation by ThinkProgress while Santorum simply responded “no.” Watch it:

But by signing the pledge, both candidates went back on their word. Footnote 4 of “The Marriage Vow: A Declaration of Dependence upon MARRIAGE and FAMILY” claims that homosexuality causes shorter life expectancy and a higher probability of sexually transmitted diseases. “[W]e estimate that nearly half of gay and bisexual men currently aged 20 years will not reach their 65th birthday,” the group notes quoting a study from 1997.

Last Friday, the LEADER backed down in the face of criticism over its anti-porn language in the pledge. The group said its restrictions against “all forms of pornography” should be interpreted narrowly and not be construed as a “nationwide ban,” but still suggested that almost all porn is illegal. It has also removed a statement in the preamble of the pledge alleging that children born into slavery came from stronger families than today’s African Americans.
