NEWS FLASH

26 Years Ago Today, Anti-Gay Congressman Hires Proponent Of Quarantining Gay People | Jim Burroway points out that on this date in 1985, Rep. William Dannemeyer (R-CA) hired Dr. Paul Cameron — who had headed a group called “the Committee to Oppose Special Rights for Homosexuals” — to advise him on “on homosexuality and acquired immune deficiency syndrome.” At the time, Cameron advocated a “rolling quarantine” of gays to stop the spread of disease and had already “linked homosexuality to criminal behavior, including mass murder and child molestation. Dannemeyer “said he trust[ed] Cameron as an adviser even though the psychologist has been expelled from the American Psychological Association and repudiated by the Nebraska Psychological Association.” Dannemeyer actively fought against funding AIDS research and once remarked on the floor of the Congress, “God’s plan for man was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.”
