At 40 years of age, Bryan Michael Egnew of North Carolina found the courage to come out to his family and church. His wife drove away to Tennessee, refusing to let him see their kids. His family withdrew and the Mormon Church immediately excommunicated him. He committed suicide just a few weeks later on Sept. 10. The news only came out this week, because his obituary and Facebook page were scrubbed of any details of what led him to take his own life. The Church of Latter-Day Saints still has no official guidelines for how to respond when someone comes out. (HT: Pride in Utah.)
