First Openly Gay Servicemember Runs For Elected Office | Today Brian Carroll, an Army veteran currently serving in the Colorado National Guard, announced his candidacy for Colorado’s 28th House District. Carroll is the first openly gay active duty servicemember to run for office since the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. After two tours of duty in Afghanistan and one in Iraq, Carroll served as a veterans affairs specialist for Sen. Mark Udall (D-CO).
