A new study from the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute finds that a growing number of same-sex families are adopting children. At least half of all same-sex couples are supporting children in foster care, and 60 percent are adopting transracially. About a third of these adoptions are “open,” with the birth families reacting very positively to the sexual orientation of the adopting couple 73 percent of the time. Lesbians are adopting more often as individuals, while gay men are adopting more often as couples. The report recommends creating more opportunities for same-sex couples to adopt, including the legalization of same-sex marriage, as well as providing additional training and educational tools for adoption agencies working with non-heterosexual parents.
