Lesbian Servicemember Fights To Protect Well Being Of Her Family

Chief Warrant Officer Charlie Morgan of the New Hampshire National Guard and her wife Karen spoke about her participation in the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network’s lawsuit against the constitutionality of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, during an appearance on MSNBC this afternoon. Morgan — who is battling breast cancer — says her wife would not be eligible for survivor benefits if her health were to take a turn for the worse as a result of the discriminatory law, which prohibits the federal government from granting benefits to same-sex couples. “We’re all willing to fight for this country, to defend our rights, but we’re also willing to fight for our family members as well,” she said.
