Maine Secures Ample Signatures For Marriage Equality Ballot Question

Equality Maine reports that it has gathered almost 100,000 signatures toward a ballot question legalizing marriage equality for committed same-sex couples. Only about 57,000 of those signatures need to qualify for the measure to advance to next November’s ballot. Same-sex marriage rights were repealed by referendum in 2009, but Maine’s is the first attempt to pass marriage equality by encouraging Maine residents to vote Yes.
