Rep. Nadler: Omission Of LGBT Families In Immigration Policy Is ‘Extremely Frustrating’ | New policy language from Immigration and Customs Enforcement for reviewing deportation proceedings does not include a specific reference to same-sex couples. Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) has admonished the omission in the new language, calling it “extremely frustrating that families of LGBT binational couples remain at risk” of being “wrongfully divided.” The working group tasked with a case-by-case review of deportation cases includes an LGBT liaison. Administration officials claim the language is inclusive because deportation cases in which an “immediate family member” is a U.S. citizen — including a same-sex partner or spouse — would be considered low priority. The Williams Institute estimates there are about 28,500 same-sex binational couples living in the U.S.
