Senate Judiciary Committee Advances LGBT-Inclusive Violence Against Women Act

The Senate Judiciary Committee has voted to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), a measure that provides funding for the investigation and prosecution of crimes against women and imposes mandatory restitution. For the first time, the bill “would make grants available for strengthening and enlarging programs to provide outreach and services to LGBT victims of domestic violence. In addition, the bill would prohibit grantees of VAWA funds from discriminating against survivors because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.”
