New Jersey Senate Approves Marriage Equality

Today, the New Jersey Senate voted 24-16 to advance a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage. The House is expected to also approve the legislation on Thursday, but Gov. Chris Christie (R) has promised a veto, insisting there should be a referendum. It would take 27 votes to override such a veto. New Jersey already offers same-sex civil unions, but a commission found in 2008 that “the Civil Union Act invites and encourages unequal treatment of same-sex couples and their children.”
