Pope: Marriage Equality Bears ‘Immense Human And Economic Cost’

Pope Benedict XVI has again spoken out against same-sex marriage, and he continues to use bizarre hyperbole to describe its supposed consequences. In an address to U.S. bishops, he said that marriage and family must be defended “from every possible misrepresentation of their true nature,” adding that “the contemporary crisis of marriage and the family… has led to grave societal problems bearing an immense human and economic cost.” In January, Benedict similarly described marriage equality as a threat to the “future of humanity itself.” Such comments continue the effort by leaders of the Catholic Church to foster a universe that does not recognize same-sex couples of any kind.
