A coalition of national LGBT equality organizations — including the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force, Freedom to Marry, GLAAD, and the Human Rights Campaign — have issued an open letter calling for a call to action surrounding the the killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. Noting that the LGBT community is no stranger to violence and bigotry, the letter argues that “Trayvon’s killing is a wakeup call to the enduring cancer of racism and racial profiling” and notes, “The pain his family continues to endure transcends communities and unites us all. Every person, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity, must be able to walk the streets without fear for their safety.” “We stand in solidarity with Trayvon’s family and friends as they seek justice for his killing,” the letter says.
