Nuns Group ‘Stunned’ By Anti-Gay Vatican Condemnation

The Leadership Conference of Women Religious, which represents 80 percent of the 57,000 Catholic nuns in the U.S., said that it was “stunned” that the Vatican was targeting it for not taking strong enough stances against same-sex marriage, abortion, and women’s ordination. In a statement posted on the group’s webpage, its presidency explained that “because the leadership of LCWR has the custom of meeting annually with the staff of [the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith] in Rome and because the conference follows canonically-approved statutes, we were taken by surprise.”
